Tephrocactus is a distinctive genus of segmented cacti in the family Cactaceae, characterized by compact, jointed stems made up of rounded, ovoid, or short cylindrical segments. Unlike the broad, flattened pads of many opuntioid cacti, Tephrocactus develops unusual rounded segments that can appear almost geometric, bead-like, or pine-cone-like. Introduction
Tephrocactus is one of the most unusual groups within the cactus family. Its plants are generally low-growing and shrubby, with branches constructed from a succession of individual segments rather than from a single continuous stem.
The segments may be globular, egg-shaped, cylindrical, or somewhat elongated, and their surfaces may be smooth or strongly tuberculate. Native Habitat

The genus is associated primarily with desert, dry shrubland, and highland environments. Individual species may occupy rocky slopes, gravelly ground, dry valleys, and other open habitats where intense sunlight, seasonal drought, and substantial temperature fluctuations are common.
