Picture Description
The photograph shows a vigorous, densely clustering cactus composed of numerous small, dark-green globular heads. The stems are strongly tuberculate, with the tubercles arranged in a spiral pattern.
Each areole produces a conspicuous group of slender, pale to whitish spines. Some spines are noticeably longer and extend outward from the body, creating an open, delicate spiny covering rather than a dense woolly coat.
Several beautiful pink to lilac-pink flowers are open simultaneously. The flowers arise laterally from the stems on elongated floral tubes, a characteristic feature of Rebutia. Numerous unopened buds can also be seen developing among the stems.
The combination of the compact clustering habit, tuberculate stems, long whitish spines, and lateral pink flowers makes this specimen particularly attractive.
Plant Description
Rebutia minuscula var. wessneriana is a small, clustering cactus belonging to the family Cactaceae. It produces numerous globular to depressed-globular stems that branch from the base and eventually form attractive low mounds.
The stems are green and divided into small tubercles that are arranged in spiral patterns. Areoles are positioned on the tubercles and carry numerous slender spines.
One of its most striking characteristics is its flowering display. Flowers emerge from the sides and lower portions of the stems rather than exclusively from the central growing point. They may be pink, violet-pink, reddish, or related shades.
Kew currently accepts Rebutia minuscula as a species and recognizes var. wessneriana as an accepted infraspecific taxon native to northwestern Argentina.

This small cactus is an excellent example of how a plant can transform a modest body into a spectacular floral display.
Individual heads remain relatively small, but the plant readily produces offsets from the base. Over time, these offsets form a dense colony or mound.
The body itself is interesting because the ribs are not sharply defined. Instead, they are expressed as rows of small tubercles arranged in spirals. Long, delicate spines emerge from the areoles, while the flowers appear from the sides of older portions of the stems.
When several heads bloom at the same time, the plant can become almost completely surrounded by flowers.
