Oreocereus is a genus of distinctive columnar cacti in the family Cactaceae, native to the highlands and dry regions of western and central South America. Introduction
Oreocereus is a genus shaped by some of the demanding environments of the South American Andes. Its species can develop into upright, branching shrubs or columnar plants, often displaying a remarkable combination of strong stems and soft-looking coverings of white, grey, or reddish hairs and spines.
The dense spination is one of the genus’s most memorable characteristics. Beneath this protective covering is a succulent stem adapted to dry conditions, while the flowers emerge from specialized areas of the plant and contribute another layer of beauty to these highland cacti.
Several species have also accumulated a long history of changing botanical names and classifications. Names formerly associated with Borzicactus, Morawetzia, Arequipa, and other genera can still be encountered in older cactus literature and horticulture. Plants of the World Online
Native Habitat
Oreocereus is native to the Andean and adjacent dry regions of South America, with species occurring in Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina. Plants of the World Online
The genus occupies varied dry environments. Some species occur primarily in desert or dry shrubland biomes, while others are associated with montane environments. For example, Oreocereus celsianus is recorded from Peru, Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina and grows primarily in a montane tropical biome, while O. ritteri and O. tacnaensis are associated with dry or desert environments in Peru. These habitats expose the plants to intense sunlight, dryness, temperature variation, and other challenging conditions, contributing to their compact and heavily protected appearance.

Why We Love Oreocereus
We love Oreocereus for the extraordinary contrast between strength and softness.
