Myrtillocactus is a genus of tree-like, branching cacti in the family Cactaceae, native to Mexico and Guatemala. Plants of the World Online currently recognizes four accepted species: Myrtillocactus cochal, M. eichlamii, M. geometrizans, and M. schenckii. Plants of the World Online
The genus is characterized by its upright, strongly branching architecture, relatively few broad ribs, small areoles, and distinctive blue-green to grey-green stems. Mature plants can develop a substantial tree-like form, making Myrtillocactus quite different in appearance from many of the smaller, globular cacti commonly grown in collections.
Introduction
Myrtillocactus is a genus of cacti with a distinctly tree-like personality. Its plants typically develop a short trunk followed by numerous upright or spreading branches, creating an open, candelabra-like crown.
The name is associated particularly with the dark, berry-like fruits produced by some members of the genus. Myrtillocactus geometrizans, the best-known species, is commonly called garambullo in Mexico and is valued both as a characteristic plant of dry Mexican landscapes and for its edible fruit. Native Habitat
Myrtillocactus is native to Mexico and Guatemala, with the greatest diversity occurring in Mexico. Plants of the World Online

Myrtillocactus geometrizans, for example, is native to several regions of Mexico and grows primarily in desert or dry shrubland biomes. Historical cactus literature may contain additional names and classifications, including the name Myrtillocereus, which is treated by Kew as an illegitimate superfluous name for the genus.
