Plant Description
A highly distinctive trailing cactus forming numerous slender, cylindrical stems that emerge upright before arching outward and eventually becoming pendent. The stems are green beneath a dense covering of fine golden-yellow, bristle-like spines, giving the plant an overall golden or straw-colored appearance.
The specimen shown displays both upright young growth and long, mature stems that curve dramatically outward and downward. This combination of branching, elongated stems and dense golden spination is characteristic of Cleistocactus winteri. The species may produce stems reaching approximately 1β1.5 m in length and is particularly well suited to hanging baskets where its trailing habit can be displayed. RHS
Cleistocactus winteri is native to Bolivia, particularly the Santa Cruz region, where it occurs as a succulent subshrub or lithophytic plant in dry habitats. Plants of the World Online
The species is also encountered in cultivation under historical names such as Hildewintera aureispina and Borzicactus aureispinus. Cleistocactus winteri is the accepted name used by Kew’s Plants of the World Online. Plants of the World Online
Life’s Whispers
Some plants are meant to reach beyond their beginnings. They rise, bend, wander, and finally descend, turning every direction into a path of growth. The golden trail reminds us that beauty can be found not only in standing tall, but also in knowing when to let go and follow the curve.
