Plant Description
Euphorbia flanaganii is a distinctive dwarf succulent with a swollen, partly underground stem and numerous slender branches spreading outward from the central crown. Its unusual architecture gives the plant its characteristic Medusa’s Head appearance. The species is native to South Africa. PlantZAfrica
The branches are cylindrical, green and tuberculate, with tiny linear leaves appearing mainly toward the growing tips. Older portions of the branches become increasingly bare as the leaves are shed. RHS

Plant Overview
The feature that most clearly distinguishes this specimen is its very slender, radially spreading branches arising from a compact central crown. Unlike larger Medusa-head Euphorbias, E. flanaganii remains a small plant, with branches forming a low spreading structure. Biodiversity Advisor
The species is particularly recognizable when new leaves appear at the branch tips while the older basal portions remain largely leafless.

Roots
The swollen central stem is associated with a largely subterranean structure adapted to the plant’s dry native environment.
Flowers
The flowers are produced as cyathia, the specialized inflorescences characteristic of Euphorbia. In E. flanaganii, the cyathia have yellow to yellow-green glands and are produced from the central portion of the plant. Seeds

Native Habitat
Geographic Distribution
Euphorbia flanaganii is endemic to South Africa, occurring principally in the Eastern Cape and extending into parts of the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Biodiversity Advisor
Natural Ecosystem
The species occurs in stabilised coastal dunes, short grassland and shallow soils over rocks, within vegetation including Albany Thicket and related grassland and savanna habitats. Biodiversity Advisor
Species-Specific Habitat Adaptation
Its low, partly subterranean body and spreading branches are suited to exposed, dry habitats where remaining close to the ground provides a distinctive growth strategy.

For this species, the principal cultivation feature is its ability to develop a broad Medusa-like crown from a relatively small caudex, making it particularly suitable for specimen cultivation in a shallow, well-drained container. The RHS lists it for full sun to partial shade and describes it as a tender succulent perennial. RHS
