Genus Overview

Introduction

Euphorbia is one of the largest and most diverse genera of flowering plants, comprising more than 2,000 recognized species. Native to Africa, Madagascar, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, the genus includes an extraordinary range of growth forms, from tiny annual herbs to towering succulent trees. The succulent members of Euphorbia are especially admired for their striking architectural forms, remarkable drought tolerance, and fascinating resemblance to true cacti. The genus was named in honor of Euphorbus, the Greek physician to King Juba II of Mauretania, who is believed to have used medicinal species of the plant. Native Habitat

Succulent Euphorbia species naturally occur in arid deserts, rocky hillsides, dry woodlands, coastal plains, and mountainous regions, particularly throughout Africa and Madagascar. They thrive in well-drained, mineral-rich soils where they experience abundant sunshine, seasonal rainfall, and prolonged dry periods. Their remarkable adaptations enable them to survive some of the harshest climates on Earth.

Growth Habit

The succulent members of Euphorbia exhibit an extraordinary diversity of growth forms. Species may grow as globular plants, columnar stems, candelabra-shaped trees, compact shrubs, or sprawling succulents. Many possess thick, water-storing stems with pronounced ribs or angles, while their leaves are often small, short-lived, or absent during dry seasons. Flower Colors

Unlike true flowers, Euphorbia produces specialized floral structures called cyathia, which are unique to the genus.

Editorial Note

Modern botanical research continues to support Euphorbia as one of the largest genera within the family Euphorbiaceae. Advances in molecular phylogenetics have expanded the genus by incorporating several formerly separate genera, resulting in a broader but more evolutionarily accurate classification. Although many succulent Euphorbia species closely resemble cacti, they belong to an entirely different plant family. Their similar appearance is the result of convergent evolution, in which unrelated plants independently developed comparable adaptations to survive in arid environments. The Green Desert Botanical Library follows currently accepted botanical taxonomy while acknowledging historical classifications and names that collectors may still encounter in botanical literature and cultivated collections.
